This small rural school in the Amboseli region of Kenya is a prime example of a community coming together.
Like many rural schools, it began with children learning under a tree before gradually developing into its current form.
The school was founded to address a significant challenge facing local families. Although Amboseli Primary School and Lemong’o Primary School are located approximately six kilometres away, parents felt it was unsafe and unrealistic for very young children to travel such distances through wildlife areas inhabited by elephants, hyenas, and lions.
The community therefore established a local school so that young children could access education within one to one-and-a-half kilometres of their homes.
The school currently employs nine teachers and is governed by a nine-member Board of Management with a student population of 108 boys and girls (almost equally split).
The student population demonstrates a healthy balance between boys and girls, with no significant gender disparity observed.
When asked about their views on education, parents unanimously stated that both boys and girls deserve equal access to schooling and educational opportunities. Community members strongly rejected the notion that girls should remain at home and demonstrated a clear commitment to educational equality.
The school currently operates up to Grade 5. Due to limited enrollment and infrastructure, it has not yet expanded to include Grades 6–10.
Students completing Grade 5 typically transition to boarding schools, most commonly Amboseli Primary School or Lemong’o Primary School.
School leadership proudly shared examples of former students who have progressed through secondary education and gone on to earn university degrees. Community members expressed hope that these graduates will eventually return and contribute to the development of the area.
We’re hoping that partnership with Grand Circle Foundation and visits from travelers with OAT will help this school and it’s community flourish.
Our first project is bringing laptops and school supplies to these thirsty young minds.
