177 generous travelers made it possible for us to help rebuild two family homes devastated by mudslides
Back in March, we sent an email plea on behalf of the Ccori and the Llanos families
, longtime friends of OAT who had lost their homes in Peru's Sacred Valley mudslides. Within days, we had exceeded our initial fundraising goal of $10,000—which included a $5000 match from Grand Circle Foundation and gifts from 106 of our travelers.
Inspired by this success, we figured, "Why stop now?" So we doubled both our goal and our matching commitment, and set out to raise the full $20,000 required to purchase the materials to rebuild both homes.
Through the generous donations of 177 travelers, combined with our matching gift of $10,000, we have exceeded our fundraising goal with a total of $21,827
Our team in Peru is working on the next phase of this project, which includes an office-wide community service event to help with the reconstruction efforts. The event will take place later this spring once the seasonal rains have ended. When the ground is dry enough, the team will visit the sites of the homes and assess what materials are needed.
We're looking forward to getting this project underway, so that these two wonderful families can live under real roofs again. We'll be updating our website with our progress, so be sure to sign up for our e-newsletter to see the rebuilt homes and hear from our regional associates about how it feels to make a difference.
