OAT's hallmark program offers an authentic glimpse of another culture
Our travel company was founded upon the principle that travel needs to be about more than just sightseeing if it's going to change people's lives. By continuing to expand our worldview through exposure to other cultures, we are learning and growing throughout our lives—and the more we engage ourselves in the daily lives of the villages we visit, the more valuable our learning becomes.
In keeping with this belief, cultural exchange has always been a vital aspect of travel for us—and this is the basis of our Day in the Life program. Featured on most OAT adventures, A Day in the Life brings travelers far off the typical tourist's path and into the heart of a real village or town. A typical day might include a walking tour, a meeting with a community leader, a shopping excursion in a local market, and a home-hosted meal. The visits also support local entrepreneurial activities—like handcraft production, for example—that provide the village with a source of income. (This aspect of A Day in the Life has evolved into our Invest in a Village program.)
To provide truly unforgettable experiences, we have fostered longstanding relationships with the village leaders who welcome our travelers into their communities—and these invaluable friendships have been years in the making. We want these leaders to trust that we care about who they are and where they come from, and by the end of every Day in the Life, we hope we've brought a little more cultural understanding into the world.
